Answers to questions that always crop up . . .
Question 1:
My child seems to like running. Is there a way to see if he/she can get faster and still like it?
Most kids love to run and running can be applied to many child and youth sports. Correct running and acceleration technique instilled at an early age can pay big benefits as the child progresses in competitive sports from softball and baseball to track, cross country and soccer.
Good youth teaching and coaching will help a child develop their natural love of running in a nurturing way with a focus on continuing fun and enjoyment while setting and achieving goals.
Question 2:
Is there a good age to get started?
From about age 8 or 9 most children are able to develop their running form and set themselves up for continued excellence through the Elementary and Middle School years. Often these children become the go-to players on their soccer, baseball or softball teams and stars on their Cross Country or Track and Field teams. Techniques and athletic mechanics learned are directly transferrable into High School athletic programs.
Question 3:
Is this something that takes a couple of sessions or can continue?
Qwik Athletics offers one-on-one and group sessions which can have immediate impact on a child athlete. A single sesssion can allow for evaluation of form and goals and set some initial improvements while multiple sessions can allow for tracking of improvements and more in-depth ongoing analysis. Many start with 3 sessions and use that as a base from which to continue.
Question 4:
So, what is competition about?
Children who would like to try and compete...either just to see how they do, or, begin or continue a sports career in Athletics or Cross Country can join the Qwik Athletics Elite team where kids and youth compete in organized track, road race and cross country meets in 2 year age bands. This is a fun environment to see if competitive athletics is enjoyable while at the same time evolving a desire to get faster. Some of these meets are sanction by USA Track and Field and can lead to participation in local association championships, regional meets or National Junior Olympics competition.
Question 5:
What clothing or gear does my child need?
One of the true advantages of running is the low cost of entry and the ability to run almost anywhere and anytime. To start, a good pair of properly fitted running shoes, shorts and tee shirt or tank top/singlet is all that is needed, plus a fair sized water bottle. In early Spring and Fall a light jacket or sweat shirt/pants can be added. Qwik Athletics can aid in correct shoe selection and also has a Qwik Athletics performance singlet and Tee available. For competitive running often children will need youth racing flats and/or youth track spikes.
Question 6:
So how do I get started?
Send us an email with contact information or fill out the form on the Contact Us page and we will follow up to determine the needs of a specific athlete. We do have an initial consultation and evaluation program that lasts about an hour and can take place at a local park or running track.
